Brian Dlouhy, MD, associate professor in the UI Department of Neurosurgery and the UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, is part of a research team that has spent more than a decade studying sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP). The group identified for the first time a specific site in the brain’s amygdala that can cause prolonged apnea, or loss of breathing.
